What is a Quinceañera?
A Quinceañera is a tradition originating from Latin America to celebrate a girl’s 15th Birthday and marking her transition from childhood to the more mature responsibilities of womanhood.
Although today a 15 year old girl is still considered a teenager and not yet an adult woman, the tradition is still commonly celebrated today more than ever with Quinceañeras ranging from simple backyard celebrations to extravagantly lavish events that would rival some of the biggest weddings most people have ever attended. In fact, Quinceañeras include many of the traditional formal moments that are seen in many weddings today.
While still common among the Latin community, we have seen an adoption of Quinceañera style celebrations in non-Latin cultures in Australia for other significant days such as 16th and 18th birthdays.
Some Quinceañera Traditions
While there are no rules to follow, your Quinceañera can be whatever you imagine it to be, there are some common traditions that you may want to consider, these include:
- Grand Entrance of both Parents and Daughter
- Changing of the shoes (usually done by the father)
- Father Daughter Dance (and sometimes a Mother Daughter Dance)
- Crowning of the Tiara (signifying her as a "princess" to her family)
- 15 Candles (the lighting 15 candles for each year of her life while honouring significant people such as parents, god-parents, etc)
- Cutting The Cake (a tradition with any birthday but more symbolic, often accompanied with a chosen song)
- And of course, the most important... the Dance Floor portion!
