What is an 18th Debut?
A Debut is a tradition originating from the Philippines to celebrate the 18th Birthday of a teenage girls, the “Debutante”, marking her coming-of-age, transitioning from teenager to adulthood.
Although this is a Filipino tradition it is commonly celebrated worldwide by the Pinoy communities in all countries. An 18th Debut celebration are often extravagantly lavish events that would rival many weddings in terms of extravagance, venue choice and number of attendees which can easily exceed 150 guests. In fact, 18th Debuts are often longer in duration than wedding receptions due to the number of formalities and outfit changes throughout the event.
While still common among the Filipino community, we have seen slightly down-scaled adoptions of Debut style celebrations in non-Filipino cultures in Australia.
Some 18th Debut Traditions
While there are no specific rules to follow, your Debut can be whatever you imagine it to be, there are some common traditions that you may want to consider, these include:
- Grand Entrance of both Parents and Daughter
- Opening Prayer
- 18 Candles (by significant people with an accompaning speech)
- 18 Roses (a rose presented by 18 males and a short dance with the last rose presented by the father with a special father-daughter dance)
- 18 Treasures (significant people presenting gifts sybolising support for her adult future)
- Cutting The Cake (often accompanied with a chosen song)
- And of course, the most important... the Dance Floor segment!
